I'd like to start a thread for Jackson Hole's Steep and Deep camp. Any skier's already planning for this camp in 2014?

Glad to hear it Ben. Have you been to this camp before? I have not but cannot wait. Have you settled on a date?

Hey,  No I haven't.  I was going to go last year but decided not to - sort of glad a didn't as the snow wasn't brilliant when the camp was on.  This year I think I will just do it!  I was going to do the one in early February but will decide in the next month I reckon as it depends on work commitments which may push it back into January.  Which one are you thinking of doing?

I plan on camp 3 (early Feb also) right now and hope for some good snow. Glad that this thread was noticed by you and hope more campers notice it as we get closer to winter. Feel free to pm me anytime and let's keep this thread going. Seems like there are a lot of repeat campers out there, must be an amazing learning experience!

I did the camp in 2002, and there was at least 50% repeat campers. Better be in shape, they'll wear you out!

I did camp 4 in 2012. I had a great time. We had lots of new snow. Get in shape! It's pretty much non-stop. mdf from epicski was in my group. Here is a report. http://www.epicski.com/t/111659/jackson-hole-steep-deep-camp-feb-2012#post_1451473

Also stayed at the Hostel. The place has a real nice vibe, although I wish it had a hot tub. Have fun.

Ave and I both had a great time.

Ave is in pretty good shape, actually, but would have had an even better time if he was in even better shape.  You have to have energy to enjoy apres, after all.

I was in the worst ski shape of my life, and it showed.  (The trip was an impulse decision, no preparation.)  As I was floundering down one of the lower faces on the last run of the day, our coach had to tell me (paraphrasing, of course) "This is supposed to be fun.  If you are so beat that you are a danger to yourself or others, you have to tell me."  The next day, in a similar situation the group  told me, "Hey, you are doing a lot better than yesterday."  My response, "Yeah, I remembered going takes a lot less work than stopping.  I'm too tired to put on the brakes."

Oh yeah, and it turns out I was skiing with a pre-existing torn ACL.  My knee went out in deep powder in Casper Bowl when I tried to exaggerate a tail slash to force more face shots.  Bad idea.  We all fell on that run, by the way - a bit embarrassing.  Skier 1 went too close to the edge of the funnel and hit a hidden rock.  I tweaked my knee.  The third skier almost made it, but blew up when she hit the consistency change near the end where skiers traversing in from below had packed down the snow. (Ave wasn' there - he had decided to take a break and ski easier stuff for the morning, so he missed the best snow of the week and his chance to fall with the group.)

I've been meanig to fill out more details on the trip report.  I have a few photos to post, too.  (Very few - not much time to take pictures.)  So I've now procrastinated though an off-season and a half.  Have to get to it....

Bottom line - a great time.    It snowed like crazy all week. I hope to go again, and to be in the shape I am in now when I do.

I stayed in the Hostel too.  Great place.  I recommend a 4th floor room so nobody is walking on your ceiling.

More details soon (maybe...)

I haven't been to it, but I skied with Tetonpwdrjunkie last year and talked to him about it.  Sounds like a great camp.

Yup, going to the first session in Feb this week

The first day at the tram dock you will form a group with an instructor and a few other students. This group doesn't matter much -- it's just to Shepard you to the ski-off, where the real groups are formed. I like to go first --better snow, less time to get nervous, and you can watch the show as the rest come down. Therefore I suggest looking for someone who looks impatient.
