ski pros/retailers: help clarify please: what does a cap ski mean exactly?

when checking out ski reviews, i often read of the term 'cap construction' on any number of skis which, when i read further, seems to suggest a cheaper manufacturing process to save labour, supplies and money (correct?)...but not necessarily a deficiency in the performance of the ski, however.

anyone care to share any links/vids or such to enlighten me, kindly, ie the pros and cons of each.

Cosmetic Cap?

Structural Cap?

Monocoque?

Step Down Sidewall?

thanks for asking me to be specific

...usually i only read the ski is ''a cap construction' ie the kastle lx

(i have read of monocoque usually on salomon skis, however...and on

atomic skis i often read of 'step down sidewall' terms being used...and

am unsure of those phrases too...just equate 'step down sidewall

with more substantial camber and edge in base...am probably wrong)

can we start with the kastle lx perhaps?

feel free to send any links explaining such terms as you've outlined in more detail.

am sure i'm not the only one a bit confused on such terms, despite loving our skis

(my current crop is kastle mx78, nordica steadfast, blizzard bonafide and atomic

bent chetler)

What I have found I prefer is a cap construction in the shovel and tail and a sandwich/sidewall construction underfoot.  Not every ski I like comes that way, but with a cap tail and shovel, the skis normally feel like they have more pop and don't get all chipped up as easily.

Thanks for both of those links.  It clarified the differences for me.
