BTW, didn't a woman get killed by a mountain lion while XC skiing out there a few years ago?

I am trying to get my ski club to do a Whistler trip to make it more affordable.

Going early or late season makes it reasonably affordable. Late season (mid march and on, also typically has fantastic conditions, and more sun (which is often missing at WB), and good rooms can be had under $200 / night (often much under). They often have "rest of season" passes too, which are pretty cheap. Fly into Sea and drive up will typically cut hundreds off the airfare.

For the price of least coast you could be at WB

Agreed. With the exception of the 5 star hotels, I think Whistler lodging is very reasonable. You can get good rooms or condos for under $200 almost all the time, except holidays. Early and late season you can even get them closer to $100 if a 3 star place is okay with you. If you wait to book, the "Last Minute Deals" of the Whistler website has killer deals for hotels 2 weeks out, and they always have a good selection (again, except for holidays).

Whistler for an extended stay, Banff if it's just a week.  Whistler has lots of terrain to explore, a bigger bar scene and if you're there for a longer period the odd catastrophic rain event won't ruin your entire trip.  Banff is lovely too but the commute to the slopes every day might get old fast.

If Banff is half the cost of Whistler that might obviously change things.

I'm serious, it's really bad, worst start since 2005. 85cm base and only 151cm year-to-date snowfall (average for this time of year is 350cm+ and base of 150cm+). Coverage is poor as there were high reverse winds with the cold snap which blew off a lot of snow. Forecast looks like there might finally be some significant snow next week, but Xmas break is looking bleak.
