HH most certainly did not invent either the concept or the word. He just happens to be a big advocate of continuing to teach it is a crucial fundamental of skiing, and not the "skiing into counter" variety. He prefers to use the verb, counter-action, to discuss movements, rather than achieved body positions.
LF, I remember when I first saw Kate's video a few months ago I got a good chuckle over her "shhhhhhhh" to the counter word. It was nice for me to see a new PSIA trainer that gets it and is not afraid to throw a little gas on the fire about it.
Personally I do think that many people around certain circles have tried to adopt a more squared off approach to skiing and have tried to dismiss early counter as irrelevant or perhaps antiquated in some way. I strongly disagree with that asssessment, but my impression has been that many, including within PSIA, have moved to emphasizing other concepts which in some ways are diametrically opposed to establishing early counter. It is for this reason, I think, that perhaps some people have stopped talking about it or or even created some kind of silly taboo about it, perhaps not intentionally; because early counter-acting movements are diametrically opposite to certain key movements which PSIA has been endorsing for the past decade or so.
Then later on, "skiing into counter" became a cool thing to say, but that is completely different in purpose then early counter, and is also counter productive for establishing early counter in the next turn. I prefer to use the term "anticipation" to refer to the tactics being employed by "skiing into counter", and reserving the word counter for a more purposeful traditional reason, which is to promote and optimize angulation and edging through the power phase of the turn, with early counter.
I would say that a lot of people in the past decade only learned the word counter at all in reference to the "skiing into counter" idea...which the word starts to really be kind of confusing for that. Counter to what?
I do think that in recent years some folks have started to realize that early counter is important and I hear it coming back more and more...so hopefully in another decade we will look back at that crazy decade where everyone tried to ski around squared.
