Yosemite backpack this summer

I got a chance to join a group on a trip to Yosemite this summer (August 2013). One of the people won a lottery slot for the high-sierra camps above Tuolumne. I haven't been backpacking since I left California in 1985, so this trip will be an easy reintroduction - no need to carry tent; breakfasts and dinners are provided. I'm really looking forward to it and just wanted to share the news.

Above is a photo of a Mule Deer I shot two years ago in Tuolumne Meadows.  Try to visit Mono Lake at sunset while you are there...a photo op for sure.

It would be fun to catch your dinner though, wouldn't it?

So its a backpacking trip but you don't have to carry a tent or food? How does that work? Is this horsepacking? Are these huts or prepared camps? I'm curious.

The Yosemite High Sierra camps have large tents with cots and meals provided. You hike to a new one each day with just your personal gear. It's like hiking between the refuges in the Alps. More of a backcountry trip than a true backpack. The only thing missing is skiing between the camps!

Like "hut to hut" trekking in the Alps. Sounds great  You said there was a lottery to get a place on these?

Hi jeff2010, I was at Housekeeping Camp in Yosemite Valley last month and learned about those High Sierra Camps from a brochure. Sounds like a great trip in store for you. I second TC above, a trip report and pictures would be warmly welcomed. Happy trails!
