Who are you skiing with that will be on the other end of that transceiver with the shovel? Do you have back country experience? If not, stay out of avalanche terrain and stick to inbounds.

In no way am I advocating that the OP go out of bounds.  Nonetheless a transceiver is REQUIRED to ride the Schlasman's lift or hike the Ridge at Bridger, or to ski North Snowfields or Big Couloir at Big Sky, even though all of these areas are controlled by ski patrol.

This is so that the resort can find the body? They don't also require a shovel?

On ski school at Big Sky, a private with Ursula Howland is money very well spent. She'll help you and your gf ski the terrain that you might not otherwise find and prepre you to ski terrain beyond your capabilities. One of the best instructors I've skied with anywhere and one of the bigger influencers in my skiing.

I've had very good lessons with RicB at Bridger.  He is Level 3 and also a Ridge Guide.  Price is right too.
