Another option would be to have an L3-tenured status, which would acknowledge that a particular skier has passed the L3 once upon a time, and everyone can imagine he must have been a real stein erickson in his/her day, even though unable to continue performing to that standard anymore. Meanwhile, give L3-current status to those who are in fact remaining current and keeping up with the times and their own body conditioning.
That's almost the situation we have now. I can maintain my L3 by doing a clinic every 3 (maybe 4?) years, but I need to do a clinic every year to continue working as a trainer.
