Transporting skis from Chile [to Australia in August]

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, greetings! - this is my first post.
Hubby and I have a trip booked for August this year, 2 week ski tour in Chile, followed by 2 weeks sightseeing in Brazil and Argentina. ( his 50th birthday pressie)
We planned to send our skis back to Australia, from Santiago, after skiing, but are getting quotes in excess $1000, and similar costs to take the skis with us, on our ongoing internal flights. We are not returning to Santiago, so can't leave them there
Have been told by the group leader that rental skis are not great in Chile, so have discounted this option.
Does anyone know any shipping company with more affordable shipping costs??
Thanks.

Iris: Welcome to EpicSki!  Sounds like a great trip.  Hopefully someone will have some advice for you.  I added a bit of info to the thread title.

DHL doesn't have a large presence in the US, so they sell through third party shippers at a large discount.

You might be able to use them to ship out of Santiago?  Pack both pairs in a double ski bag or tube and see what they would charge.

Conversely, you could give them as a tip or just sell them cheap in Chile.

sell your skis in Chile, the instructors/locals are always looking for something good (assuming they are good)

then you have the bonus of spending money and the excuse to buy new skis next winter
