Heavyweight Novice learning skis?

I approach 300 pounds and found that last year when I "rented" my skis at the Tahoe resorts they were squirrly as hell to learn on. Could that be because rental skis in general are not meant for jumbo guys like me? I would be willing to buy my learning skis next year if it would help. What say you? Thanks...

Height may help but if your learning, then I don't know that there'd be any lower cost ski that very firm, I'd hit a local shop and ask, you can rent higher end models that would be far more firm, match to your weight.  Rentals I believe tend to be a bit more soft/forgiving as to aid the beginner for on population, statistically lower weights.

I like Ski Canada's reviews as they rank weight of skier as one criteria which I find useful, but again, these tend to be more pricey skis and unless you've skied a handful of types, I'd guess it'd be a shot in the dark to just buy some.

so, my opinion, if still beginning and my having little knowledge of the 300lb skier options is rent till you're more aware of what you wish to ski and note your thoughts on the rentals used, renting higher end ones.  If you find one you like, one can often apply the rental cost to the ski's if bought.

Squirrly..? Were your skis too short for you? The ski rentals tend to give short skis to new comers especially~I remember that once someone handed me a pair of 165...I'm 183...

Would you be able to describe 'squirrly' in a bit more details? It sounds a bit vague and there can be many reasons to that...
