Was is open and closest to Dresden?

Most Austrian glacier areas are still in operation: Sölden, Pitztal, Kaprun etc. All still about 650 km from Dresden, though. THe ski area in Poland and the Czech Republic (which is much closer to Dresden) are all closed this time of year.

I figured that Austria would be closest.  Any recommendations on which glacier would be better?

Dresden is a seriously long way from the Alps. At this time of year, I would really not suggest wasting your time and money getting to Austria to ski the few pistes open on a glacier for the few hours a day it will be good for. Even if it were mid-winter, I would suggest looking at a map and thinking about just how far it is.

This is like asking "I'm going to be in Omaha in late May. Where can I go skiing?"

There are plenty of other things to do in and near Dresden in May. Do those things.

I visited Dresden years ago when I was backpacking around Europe.  At the time it was in the old East Germany.  Kurt Vonnegut was held as a prisoner-of-war in a slaughterhouse in Dresden the night it was leveled by an Allied bombing raid during World War II.  It inspired him to write his novel "Slaughterhouse-Five".  The Elbe runs right through the middle of the city, and it has some beautiful Baroque architecture.  The Frauenkirche was mostly rubble when I was there, but I understand it's since been rebuilt.  When it was part of East Germany the city was dominated, architecturally, by Soviet-era buildings.  My understanding is, since the reunification of Germany, many of the Baroque buildings have been restored.  I'd love to go back some day.
