Schweitzer - May 11, 2013

Well, with a still solid 9' of snowpack, 85 degrees in Spokane, clear skies at Schweitzer, I added another day to my total for the year this past Saturday. A buddy of mine and I  bootpacked and skinned from the Schweitzer village at 4,600' to the top of the triple at 6,400' and skied a couple of runs on the face then back to the village. It was really nice to get some spring skiing in, since closing weekend at Schweitzer involved 9" of new overnight and storm skiing all day that Saturday. This time, we even got to wear shorts!  Here's some shots from the day.

Standing on top with Lake Pend O'Reille as a backdrop:

Harvesting some corn down the face:

Jeff checking out the view

Jeff getting ready to ski the cream

Jeff churning the butter

Pray for snow???

All in all, a fun way to waste away a Saturday. Maybe time to get some more this weekend and increase my ski day count one more time.

Nice job! Snowpack is holding pretty good up there.. Was there much of a hike on dirt above the village?

Did some skiing myself last weekend above Wallace.

Did my first boot pack up there 40 years ago in May.  Seems like yesterday.  I enjoy doing the same more today and do it more often than I did then...which seems hard to believe.

Thanks! There really was only about 10 steps we had to take that weren't in snow. There were some hollow spots over creeks that we had to be careful of but we started out in snow at the bottom of the Basin Express quad, went up about 75 yards in snow, did a creek crossing in those 10 steps, then bootpacked to the bottom of the triple, then skinned the rest of the way. On the way down, we skied to the creek crossing again, crossed, put the skis back on and skied to the bottom of the Basin Express at village elevation.  It's not going to last. By this Saturday, I think the bottom 300 vertical feet will look like my 'Pray for snow' picture. Still, up above, it should be good skiing for a few weeks yet.

Nice job on getting back out after your injury!

Here's a couple more pictures from Saturday:

Looking up the hill to the top where we skied. The towers at the top are the triple chair terminal on the right and cell towers to the left. We skied pretty much directly below the cell tower line.

Here's a shot of Jeff that shows the coverage in the area. Not bad for mid-May!

Not bad at all.. Might have to head up there in the next couple weeks.

Snotel still showing 93 inches on top. (Compared with a whopping 152 this date last year)

Sweet! Looks like you and Jeff hit it right on the money with the weather. I'd imagine a few aspects in the North Bowl would be really good.

Yeah, it was just about perfect temps. Snow was a little gooey but not too bad. North Bowl; Misfortune, Banana Chute, etc. would likely be really good but kind of a long haul out of there. I'm thinking St. Helens next month, maybe.

Selkirk Powder Co says 20" new on top on May 23rd. If you hit the right aspects in South Bowl, should be some nice turns today.

I might have to check out the Cabinets across the lake this weekend.
