May Day 2013 Powder in Loveland Colorado--a video trip report

Yes, there is snow in Colorado in May!

It was Betsy's birthday, and it always snows on Betsy's birthday--she plans it that way. (I know...) (right?)

Loveland's overnight report (as of 5am) was just 3 inches, but there was easily 6-8" in the parking lot when I got there. Early morning conditions were very light winter snow on top of concrete--not easy conditions (good--or good for you--take your choice). By noon, it was snowing so hard that half an inch of snow would pile up on our skis and clothing on each lift ride. There was probably 16 inches of new snow by 2:00, deep enough to be real powder, but still so light that anything underneath it could still surprise you.

It was an awesome day.

Happy Birthday, Betsy!

And thanks to the rest of the May Day Gang for a great day of powder skiing.

This image may sum up the snowfall for May Day 2013: my little Mazda in the Loveland parking lot at the end of the day:

Best regards,
Bob

Is there going to be a repeat performance of this for the Mother's Day Gathering?

Wow Bob, great video!  Thank you so much for putting that together -- what a great gift.  That was truly the best birthday ever.  Not just because of the epic powder, but because of the company.  And you're right (I KNOW!), I do plan on a blizzard every May 1st.  snowfalling.gif

Everyone, start making your plans for 5/1/14!

Should the Mother's Day Gathering become the Betsy's Birthday Gathering in order to ensure freshies?

You might be on to something Kevin!

Whoa, my post count is getting up there....I'd better slow down....

Great Video Bob Barnes!

Reminds me however that we've got to start turning that camera back on YOU!

Thanks to all the May 1st Birthday Powder Skiers for another great Loveland Birthday Ski event (aka...the powder tune up cake eating fest for the AB Mother's Day party)

L-R:  Tsavo, Betsy, Cathy, Segbrown, SkiNurse

L-R:  cgeib, Bob Barnes, Me, Mr. Vertical, JonnyVertical

Birthday girl:

SkiNurse:

JonnyVertical, the boarding wonder-son of Mr. Vertical.  Mr. Vertical missing in these shots as he was too fast to capture...never sat still in that powder ;)

Segbrown burning by...:

cgeib slaying (with Bob Barnes above doing video):

Me (and of note, at 6'-3" I was getting face shots in the afternoon over on One, Eight and Nine):

Brother and sister (I know!  Right!) Bob Barnes and Betsy

Note: outside of standing doing video capture, this is of the rare times Bob is caught still in all the powder...he really got after it...unfortunately that video of his high energy skiing performance was not captured to show :(

Betsy and Segbrown sporting the winter smiles of a May 1st snowfall:

Bob showed his car covered earlier in this thread...I had to dig into mine to grab the birthday cake.  Nothing more awesome than seeing this type of snow cover in a parking lot:

With Katy's special carrot cake (she worked hard making that...even the carrots were from seed ;) and the chocolate decadence that was decadent, Betsy prepares to cut it all up with cgeib policing any mistakes.

Happy Birthday wife and nice work, again, calling up the forecast for powder.  Thanks to all our friends for making it another EPIC birthday.

Here's to next year's birthday ski with our next focus on this coming Mother's Day ABasin ski with friends!

That does not look like it suckedeek.gif

Happy Birthday Betsy!

My cinematography skills are way below Bob's and it wasn't as deep at A Basin today, but there was still some nice blue bird powder skiing to be had.

I like the quality of the version I uploaded to Facebook better- https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201176229916651

Most excellent videos. Thanks for sharing. Wish I could've got away to get up there.

Full disclosure:

Not all powder face shots are welcomed ;)

Segbrown followed by SkiNurse (perfect, right?!) came upon me in this quicksand first part of the day.  A brushed left tip went up and then augured down hard and fast about 20 yards above having me slide into this position at a speed that melted my trail.

Thankfully, no harm to the tree rolleyes.gif

Bob, a super video, it makes me envious all over. On Monday I'll be 81 and all my May skiing has to be the wedeln on Epicski. Happy Birthday to Betsy, though I never met her I would really enjoy skiing with her. Maybe when I get a little older I'll make the trek to Colorado again. After right knee replacement in November, Ann is is fully mobile and it is as if it never happened so she will ski again next winter.

So nice to see everyone having so much fun....

Wow--Ott--great to hear from you!

It would be so nice to see you and Ann again. Maybe next May we'll have to have an extra special birthday celebration for you and Betsy and all of the other May celebrities.

Meanwhile, your wedeln is still happening all over EpicSki. How many turns now? I remember that we figured out a couple years back when you'd make your billion'th turn, all without stopping to catch your breath or even take a lift ride.

I hope you and Ann are well, that you've had a great winter, and that you have fantastic plans for the upcoming summer. Please be sure to drop a line if you make it anywhere near to Colorado.

Happy Birthday (a few days in advance)!

Best regards,
Bob

Great video Bob, and way to outsmart the weather forecasters!   They were only calling for a couple inches.  I was watching the forecast all week to pick my day to ski.  I decided it was better to wait until the sun came out the next day.   No dust on crust for me.

You were so right, and the weather forecasters and I were so wrong!  Nice call.  Next time, please let us know too. :-)

According to the original calculations, Ott will reach his 1,000,000,000th turn on October 14, 2014.  Given that Loveland and A-Basin usually seem to be open by then, perhaps the Grand Billionth Party should occur there?

And yes, I'm up way too early because I couldn't sleep worth a damn last night.  frown.gif

Looks great Bob!!!

sometimes density to snow is a good thing though eh?

Nice to see you around.  Glad Ann is healed.  My father in law had a knee replacement and said that it changed his life for the better.

Would love to meet up with you and your lovely wife.

Hey Ott,

Wonderful news about Ann's new knee! Keep on Wedeln and enjoy those turns together next season smile.gif

Hope you make that trek to CO ...look us up when you do...

Best,

Chris

Time sure flies, doesn't it? Ott started his run in 2002, and we did those "billionth turn" calculations way back in 2010, when he had a mere three-quarters of a billion turns on those skis (I wonder if they need waxing yet...).

And now that billionth turn will happen just next year, October 14, 2014. Betsy--do you think you can start planning the party, along with a good blizzard to get Loveland or Arapahoe Basin open?

Let's take another peak at Ott's tireless, record-breaking wedeln streak:

Never quit!

Best regards,
Bob

Ott -- Thank you for your birthday wishes.  And Happy Birthday to you yesterday!   I hope you and Ann can make it out to Colorado next winter.  It would be great to meet and ski with you both.

A slight re-edit of the Mayhember Day/Betsy's Birthday video--what a powder day it was!

Meanwhile, The Gang is still enjoying that snow on Mother's Day at Arapahoe Basin. Spring is great.

Best regards,
Bob
