the s/m will be shorter for sure! tgat's how it loses 2lts. the specs are listed the same on osprey website, but remember that the s/m is 14lts and m/l is 16lts. mine is a s/m and the back grey area is about 17". If you really think it's not gonna work talk to osprey and ask for the correct specs, their customer service is great

My sons S/M Karve 6 is 17.25" and my M/L is 19.25".  This is from the piping at the top of the grey backing to the bottom of the grey where it meets the black bottom.

I'm not sure what the knock on em is regarding the straps.  I've never noticed an issue.

The straps that I am talking are only in the Karve 16, the side ones, other than that I am probably good.

I have ordered the Karve 11 small and will see how it feels.

So, got the Karve 11 S/M......ideal size I was looking for, it is smaller in length than the M/L. Almost 2" like RodPNW said in the post above.

It is also thinner and good for a days things worth on the groomers. The 2L hydration pack is a tight fit, which is good in general, but putting in have to be exactly placed. not many straps like the 16, and I think I will enjoy this one.
