Side country is a subset of back country, only in a particular location. Some back country is safer than others. 20 degree slopes and 75 degree slopes are safer regarding avalanches than slopes that ar 40 degrees. It's easier to drag yourself a mile through the snow with a broken leg than to drag yourself 30 miles.
I applaud attempts at education. People need to know about avalanches and tree wells. People need to know that side country is not in-bounds, and should be aware of the extra risk they are accepting when they decide to leave the ski area.
I have never had a close friend or relative die in the back country (including side country). I have never had a close friend or relative die in a motorcycle accident, but I can assure you that if they were to die, my attitude would still be the same. They made the choice; they accepted the risk, and I'm glad they had the freedom to do so. Freedom has a cost. He who calls the tune pays the piper, and his friends and relatives have to live with that.
