Difference between nuking and puking?

It's been doing this all day, one or the other or both. Is there a difference, and what is it? Discuss.

you must be bored...just get out and enjoy it!

I'll play (and yeah, its the end of the season)

Nuking is hard snow but consistent  think 1+ inch per hour.

Puking is super heavy but for shorter periods of time like squalls.  think 2+inches per hour pace

All I know is that I like both.  icon14.gif

I think of nuking as puking with wind. or maybe that's dumping who knows.

It nuked all day at WP. Or maybe it puked. Whichever it was, it did it so much that the pass closed until tomorrow morning. Untracked in Topher's at 3pm...

Strange how two things that are so awful represent something so awesome.

If it's nuking, there'd better be at least 1 foot of snow during a 24 hour period, and there should probably be more like 18 inches.  Unless there was like 6 inches in one hour.  Otherwise it's not really nuking.

We're really gettin' down to it huh?

What do you mean "hard snow"? Surely not icy crystal pellets?

I think "it's snowing really hard" is about an inch per hour so I'd agree that 1+ goes towards nuking, but it should be closer to 2 inch/hour.

Puking, I have no idea about.

Now, what if it's puking or nuking graupel? As it did this weekend in New England? What's that called? "Projectile vomiting?" (The lengths we'll go to keep seg happy)

I'd call 6 inches/ hour is massively puking.

That also depends on temperature, though.  It seemed to be around 30 most of the day, and it looks like Loveland got about 14" in 18 hr. Had it been colder, that would have been 2 ft or more. I wish Copper's snow stake  cam wasn't covered up.

(of course I could just go outside and measure)

That's a good point about temperature.  We're going to have to create a spread sheet to account for snow to precip ratios.  redface.gif

It only "nuked" on me once all season.  Kind of a bust of a day where it was supposed to rain, Squaw didn't even open, so my wife and I went to breakfast in Truckee just as it started snowing due to a last second temp drop.  We came out an hour later and there was a good 5-6 inches on top of the car.

I was! I ended up driving back to Silverthorne via Kremmling because I have to work tomorrow. It is going to be sweet up there tomorrow, if you can get there.

Regionally nuanced dialects.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...it's a regional thing.  I never hear anyone use the term "nuking," but I hear "puking" all the time.  I also still hear dumping and even dumpage fairly often, which like the others, are also taken from a less appealing form of dump as used in other...uh...contexts.

I've used "snow-pour" a few times over the last month or so.  I admit I ripped it off from downpour, but linguistic originality has never been my strong suit.  frown.gif

Sigh, the quest to coin a catch-phrase that takes off like wildfire in pop culture continues.....unrealized.  mad.gif

My home mountain was formerly named Tod Mountain. Frequent small snowfalls are the norm, so when it snows 1"/hour as it often does, for 1 hour, then stops, it is called a "Tod Tease".

Once while skiing at Whitewater, B.C. (Whitewater average annual snowfall=40 feet) it started snowing 1"/hour and I thought to myself, I wonder what the Whitewater equivalent to a Tod Tease is called. I never found out, but it lasted for 8 hours.
