I'm serious. I learned on hard pack and ice (groomed). I really like the speed and for me it's both easy-ish to ski on and satisfying.
I just had my light powder day in Vail and while I can understand the draw of getting a perfect patch of powder, I still prefer ice. I like when it's smooth enough that you don't have to worry too much about a rough bump sending you careening. I like when it's steep enough that you can't really stop - the best you can hope for is course corrections. When you slide out it doesn't really hurt, besides the ice burn and sliding into trees, but you'll be sliding for a long long time. What draws me to it is that I have to be very focused while doing it. Any lapse can mean very bad things. It gets really exciting when just the wind resistance from uneven posture threatens to knock you off balance or if you take a jump in the middle of a high speed turn and you're shooting through the air sideways.
