Summer Race Training Programs

Looks like the Ski Season here in the Tahoe Region is about over, maybe we get a freak dump, and we can get a day in, but it is time to start thinking about next season.

So now that next season is on the mind....  I have been approached by another parent of a young 8-9 year old skier about enrolling our kids into a 10 day program up in Mt. Hood, this June.

Reading up on it, it seems like a great adventure for my 8 yr old daughter.  She will have a friend that she races and trains with durning the season with her, and this will be their 1st sleep away camp of any kind.  But it also looks like she/they will get some insight into what it takes to become a good racer, no off-season if you want to max your potential.

My question is has anyone trained at one of these summer ski camps ?  Anyone done the Mt. Hood one?  Anyone send their young groms up to one of these, and what difference in your skiing, or skier did you notice?

Can you give me some insight, pointers, expectations, etc...

Thanks

Hey Parkmonkey

Which camp are you looking into?  There are many that camps that train at Mt. Hood during the summer. I actually work as a counselor at Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camps (MHSSC) so I can help you out with anything related to MHSSC.

First off 8 is young to be going out to Mt. Hood.  We offer a family camp for parents who want to be out there with their younger kids.  http://www.mthood.com/family_camp.htm

Many families do this:  Send a few friends out for train together and one parent watches after all of them.  That parent can sign up for camp too, or simply pick the kids up after skiing.

Basically everyone who comes to camp improves.  On hill video analysis makes a huge difference and you will be able to trace progress from the first to last day.

PM me of give the camp office a call if you have any questions 503-337-2230

Thanks Matt,

We spoke with Tichy Ski and NASC both said they would take our two 8 yr olds.

I think we plan to hang out a couple days to just make sure they settle in.

We want to get them ready to move to the Far West Program next year, which requires a lot more independent actions on part of the girls, and thought this would be a good starting point for that.

I will PM you with a couple questions.

One quick question, How is the weather up there in the middle of June... ?

Thanks Matt.

Weather in June can be variable.  The is more snow still on the mountain but that won't make much impact for training on Palmer.  The snow will stay longer with less salting so conditions will be more winter like.  Days can range from sunny and in the 50-60s to snowing the next.  Timberline is more likely to be on hold in June but you could easily get 5 days of sun in a row.  Generally after July 4th it is sunny for the most part.

I've done Tichy Camp a few times. Great family. Learned a lot and good food.biggrin.gif Highly recommend any of the ski camps. It will take your skiing to the next level.

that is great, thanks for responding.

Did you happen to see any little ski racers while you were there?  I have two 8 yr old girls going in the middle of June for 10 days, they are good racers from Tahoe, and Tichy said they would take them without parents.   Looks like they will have a blast and can't wait to see what it does for their skiing next Far West season...

Oh yes Tichy has a program just for kids. And Mr.Tichy himself teaches it. No funny business with him ski.gifit's all about racing. You won't be disappointed. They have nice accommodations in Government Camp. Did I mention Mrs. Tichy is a good cook.icon14.gif  Your kids are in good hands with these folks. Have a blast!
