Best Time Of Year To Buy New Equipment?

Thread Starter

After 7 years it's time to buy new equipment. First on the list is new boots, then skis.

With the end of the ski season approaching I'm curious about the best time to getthe best deals on new equipment. Due to my work my season is already over so any skiing for the rest of this season is not relivent. Should I be shopping now, wait a few weeks, over the summer, etc?

Thanks

Now is a good time.  Do you have any decent shops were you live?  You need to try on boots!

Skis and bindings you can get anywhere.

I agree that now is a good time, BUT with boots your selection may be limited.  Boots are definitely not an item that you want to go for the left over that may not be right for you.  Find a good honest fitter who will tell you whether you should buy now or wait until you can find the proper boot (next fall)

Best deals are in the spring--now.  Also, in ski towns there are often labor day sales of last year's gear. Downsides--popular skis, especially in popular lengths are sold out (Bonafides were gone before xmas). Boots are best bought from a shop with a good fitter--may be a specialty boot shop or a general ski shop, and fitting usually comes with free adjustments for a period of time, which are usually needed, so buy from a shop that you will be able to return to next season, and make sure it will cover adjustments next season.

I will rock the boat and say you don't need to panic unless there is an exact ski you want that will sell out. My opinion is there are 2 sales periods. Now in spring, but there is also a sales window in the fall when shops open up again, and need to clear up space for the new incoming gear. I've noticed this especially with activity for used/demo ski clearance
To clarify, I'm saying there is a big lull during the middle of summer when there is not a lot of activity or sales.

Different shops will mark down their gear at different times.  Shops that were well priced in January have already sold out, while others that were still full MSRP in the last month, likely have everything in stock still.

I buy all my gear over the internet, so I there is always another piece of gear I find at a smokin price and have to buyrolleyes.gif  Just bought some new touring boots last week.  Got the last pair in my size for 40% off.

Know what your shopping for.  Do your research.  Once you know what you want, be patient to get a good deal.  However, the optimal time for selection and price is between January and now.

Happy hunting.

I like buying boots in Feb when they first start the 'end of season' sales at many ski shops and start trying dump inventory.   In Feb they'll have much more stock available than they will in April or May.

Ski I buy whenever I can find the best deal on what I'm looking for.  Just got my wife some very slightly used Demo ski's for 60% retail.
