You should take a look at the 2014 Mazda CX5- I've driven the Sport AWD, Grand Touring AWD, Sport FWD, and the 2013 CX5 Sport AWD
I drove the 2014 CX5 AWD enough miles to know it gets 35+ mpg- on the road at decent speeds and driving right on flat blacktop no wind- at 60 it registered 47.3mpg-
but then again- I can easily beat the EPA listed mpg on both my Escapes
I have 3 dealers I've got real interested- out the door base CX5 Sport 4WD I have 2 down to $25,375-
I've let 2 of them give my Escapes a good look over and appraise- interesting as they think they have me
You should go on Edmunds.com, check out the sites owner, as he does a lot of testing on new vehicles- rates the CX5 at the top of the SUV's
I'm actually big fan of the CX-5 (for a crossover). A couple squabbles about it, though. As usual, you can only get a manual trans with a FWD, base model. Second, they are just too slow for my taste, however that is one way they achieve such stellar mpg, so I still have to give Mazda credit for it's incredible, super high-compression SkyActiv engine.
I'm thinking the diesel should address point number 2, though. Will still have great mpg, but should have loads more torque.
No matter what though, they are probably one of the best driving crossovers out there. I'm a huge fan of Mazda and have owned 3 of them. Would probably buy another if they can come out with a model that checks all the right boxes for me.
