Driving to Big White from Vancouver

Thread Starter

I am working on next years big ski trip to Big White and was thinking of flying into Vancouver and driving to Big White.  The rates to Vancouver are about $250 pp cheaper than Kelowna.  Of course we would have to rent a SUV ($500) but since we are a party of 4 (or possible 6), there are still significant savings.

So how is the drive?  I know it is about 5 hours drive and that's about it.

I did the drive from Denver to Aspen once and now prefer just to fly into aspen because there is not much of a cost savings involved and you do not need a vehicle while in Aspen.

thanks

often do that drive its an easy 110k -120k route once out of city traffic town.

But there are 2 sections which can get bad conditions:

1:Hope up to the summit of Coquihalla, often rain turns to powder  and the road changes from wet to wet/ice to snow. (worse on way back).

2: Merritt to Kelowna the summit often gets foggy.

Watch for the signboards before Hope they will warn you of adverse conditions or any closures

We never bother going any other way unless the road is closed, in the unlikely event it is, your second choice is Hwy 3 the Hope -Princeton about 1.5 hours longer to Big White  Usually dry after Princeton.

if you have the chance check the other 2 closest hills in that area Silver Star -25 minutes out of Vernon, and Apex about 35 minutes out of Penticton both are well worth a stop. If you are good skiers you might even prefer them. Pretty easy loop doing all three.

I think noncrazycanuck nailed it re checking out other resorts.  If that is something you're interested in, renting may be the better option as you have flexibility.  However, if not and it is $500 to rent + gas $$$ + time, pay the $250 extra pp to fly to Kelowna and go straight to Big White and don't look back.
