A Wheeling buddy of mine today said I should also be looking at early 2000's Landrover Disco's that have good maintenance history. I looked at a few online, and whoa, massive depreciation, folks!...They are pretty cheap to buy on the used market, more than I realized! (Sub $10k for nice looking examples with just around 100k miles.)
Any input from someone who's owned a Disco is much appreciated. If I were to consider a 2002-2005, any special caveats?
Before I bought a FJ Cruiser, I was looking at Disco's and talked myself out of it, just for the simple fact that I could for sure expect some powertrain and electrical issues at some point, plus the damned things were underpowered big time. But when I talk to guys who own them, they just love them, and rave about the off-roadability, and combining that with decent on-road comfort and room for gear and family, it's in the same ballpark with the Landcruiser in terms of functionality. Reliability and cost of ownership most likely are a far cry from a Yota, but if I can nab one for sub-$10k which has excellent maintenance history and not too high mileage on it, and if I keep it for 2 years, maybe it'll be okay?
As for the mention above of the F250 King Ranch, actually I had a F150 Supercrew Lariat w/Ecoboost motor for a week a couple years ago, and it was simply great. Loved it! I will definitely get one at some point. Don't really need the F250, not towing a race car anymore, but the F150 for sure is on my short list.
