Doh! I'm an idiot! - or - Did I buy the wrong size ski?

Thread Starter

So my new Prophet 90's arrived yesterday.  I demoed them last year, but had to order them online last week since they were sold out locally.

Haven't bought new skis (for myself) in seven years.  And I THOUGHT the Public EnemiesI've been skiing were 186's.  So I ordered the Prophet in 186.

Unboxed them and - damn! These things look huge.  Put em up next to my PE's and the lightbulb slowly started to turn on - ohhhhh shhhhh---ttttt!!  Looked at the side of my PE's and sure enough they are 179's.

So other than feeling kind of stupid for not knowing that, I'm not really too worried.  I'm not a small guy - 5'11, 220 - and I"m not going to try to rate myself as a skier, but I'm firmly above intermediate, ski fairly aggressively, prefer to be off the groomers, in the bumps or trees, unless everything is frozen up.

Will get them on snow this weekend and see what's what - but in the meantime I thought I'd amuse you all with my stupidity, and ask your opinion on whether I'll even notice the difference (not between the PE's and these, but would the Prophet in 179 really be much different for me than in 186?).

186 in a twintip ski acts more like a mid to high 170's ski on the snow.  At 5'11" and 220 lbs you should have no issues with the longer ski.

I'm 6' and 185" and wouldn't want to go any shorter than my 181cm twintips.

Even if they feel long initially, you'll quickly adapt to the length.

P.S.  If in the end they do end up being to long for you, you'll easily be able to sell them here since it's a popular ski.biggrin.gif

Relax.  At your size and weight the 186 is the correct length.  But even if you got the 179 you probably wouldn't notice much if any difference.  We are talking 7cm which is 2 1/2 inches not that much. Plus the P90's have a touch of early rise this year which will make them ski a tad shorter and the P90 is an easy to ski that is forgiving.  You are worrying about nothing.

In closing, mount them up, go ski them and have fun!

Complete non-issue. The prophet has a rockered tip, the PE's are a full camber ski.

The effective hard snow contact of the Prophet is probably less than the PE's.

With rockered skis and especially "funshape" 5 dimension skis like the S7, it usually makes sense to size up from the typical preferred ski length in a full camber ski. The extra length gets more float in powder, but on hard snow there is less ski touching the snow.

My Bluehouse Maestros in a 189 have a snowblade-type 112 CM running length- With the ski flat on hard snow, only 112 cm of a 189 ski is touching the snow.
