Ok so I'm trying to identify the best ski's for my buddy who I taught to ski last year and has about 25 days skiing lifetime now. He's 6'4 225 and not super co-ordinated cause of his size. He's skiing on my old 166cm 90 mm head mojo twin tips. He loves them and he goes fast and loves going fast down hard pack groomer runs. The mojos are a pretty stiff twin tip. He can handle any groomed double diamond fine. I am 5'6" 160 lbs and I love to bomb all over the mountain on a 169 cm 105mm obsetheds. I ski faster then I ever have before because of the stability of the rocker and I love just blasting on end of day cruddy groomers on them. In powder they are unreal. On groomers he goes almost as fast as me if the snow isn't all crudded up. Currently in powder it simply isn't possible that he can ski where I ski because I'm on superior equipment and have nearly 20 years skiing on him. As the day gets crummier my big friend on the old un rockered 166 cm 90 mm twin tips ski's has more trouble. He's also not good at getting low and blasting through moguls or crud yet. He does't carve at high speeds as much as he smears his turns in controlled speed monitoring. He skis in a more upright stance with the ski's always 12" to 18" apart. They never come together and I think he keeps a lot of his weight on each ski as opposed to weighting the downhill ski. (He is amazingly stable like this though, but I think this will hinder his progress in technical bumpier areas more) I want to identify the next ski for him that is going to help him be a better skier. Obviously he needs something bigger but I don't wanna go huge and overwhelm him either. He just discovered the magic of powder skiing and enjoys Blue Square level tree skiing and loves powder all of a sudden. At 6'4 225 I want to get him on something rockered with more width and length. I want to find him some obsetheds like mine in the 179 or 189 length but they are tough to come by. I've found him some 176 fischer watea's 98mm for under 300 shipped with bindings. I think they might be the idea next step up for him, but I wonder if they will be too soft for him to enjoy 'bombing' down groomers considering his size. Anybody have anything better for sale? We're going to ski 9 days in BC in late march so I want him on the best equipment for himself. We ski New England 20-30 days per year.
