I finally got to demo the Bones. The only one I could find was the 187 at Kittredge in Mammoth . I previously demoed the Volkl Mantras size 177 in Mammoth , I absolutely loved them. They were great . Anyway I thought I should give the Bones a try since they are so coveted by so many.
First me 6' 2" 195 advanced skier, Love to carve the turns I don't do alot of tree sking or off piste. I guess I am the guy who wants a one ski quiver, that can do it all like these skis promise to do . That may change . more on that later.
Mammoth conditions . Warm mostly spring sking with some powder on a few runs . Not much . Slush on lower runs. Fast hard on upper mountain.
Bonafide --- First off the skis were similar on the groomers to the Mantras . Stable at speed , good turns , stable on crud. Fast. The powder that I could find was minimal , but the skis were very comfortable in it. That was a plus. Overall The skis felt heavy probably too long I felt they were lead sleds on my feet. Im not sure why people like this feeling . The Mantras felt light and nimble and just as stable maybe more stable. I skied the Dragons back , snow was hard and there was lots of crud the skis seem to handle that pretty well. Overall , I was not blown away by these skis like I thought I would be. I feel like I need to try the 180s on a better snow day, to really compare. But after trying these I kind of think I am going to go with the Mantras and forget the One ski quiver and get another pair of powder/off piste skis. But Like I said I will try the Bonafide 180 cm skis and give them a few more days. But so far , Mantra is better for me, Just my opinion .
