replacing my trusty volant power karves ... help!

Hi Everyone.

I have been skiing Volant Power Karves (circa 2000) and am ready to purchase some new skis to replace them.  What I like about the Volants are:

- their ability to hold an edge

- their ability to plow through everything with ease

So i am looking for skis with those characteristics but also something that is a bit quicker edge and with a bit more liveliness to them.  I thought what i wanted was an all mountain ski so i demo'd a pair of Dynastar Outlands 87s.  I did not like them at all.  I was skiing at tremblant on steep runs with no bumps with a little bit of fresh snow with a very hard base underneath.  The Outlands were not close to holding an edge like the Volants.  So I switched demos to the Rossi SL 8s (slalom ski) which i really liked.  The were quick and easy to ski but did not have the same stabilty as the Volants when i got into a bit of snow.

About me and my skiing:

  1. Where in the world are you skiing?

A: Mostly eastern canada/us.  Usually one trip a year out west to banff

  1. What kinds of terrain do you prefer (groomed runs, moguls, race course, park'n'pipe, trees, steeps, backcountry/sidecountry)

A: prefer steep groomed runs with no bumps.  Would like the flexibility to get into the trees and want a ski that will handle powder ok.

  1. How many days a year do you ski?

A: 10

  1. How advanced are you as a skier?

A: I consider myself advanced (except in the bumps where i am useless)

  1. What's your height and weight?

A: 5'10" 180lbs. 45yrs old

Thanks for any recommendations.  I am feeling overwhelmed by the choices.

I switched over from Powerkarves to Line Prophet 90s 4-5 years ago. You might want to give the updated Line Prophet series a try. Based on what you want to ski try the Prophet 85 or 90.

Maybe you can find a left-over Rossi 82 Avenger Ti.  (the replacement apparently added rocker and so changed the character of the ski).  I think you would like that.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Have found some very good deals online for the Avengers.

Also, wondering if people think the Kastle MX 78 would be a good fit?  Seems like a good all rounder but excels on frontside.  A local shop has a great deal on the 2010s.  Which brings me to my next question, which perhaps i should post separately, but have their been significant changes in mx78 in the last three years that i should be aware of?

thanks again.
