I don't know the first thing about buying skis.

This question is for a friend of mine who needs new skis. I started skiing last year and bought a pair of Salomon XWing 8's simply because they were on sale, were intermediate skis, and they were the right size (160cm, I'm 5'5"). I lucked out because they are fantastic skis.

My friend didn't. She bought beginner skis and it's like skiing on a pair of tuning forks. They vibrate and chatter like crazy. Mine are way more stable and she skis much better on mine than on her's.

So I want to help her find another pair.

We ski in Lake Tahoe. Mostly hard pack, ice, and wet powder. Some trips out to Colorado as well.

Read up on the articles in the link at the top which give tips to new skiers.

Then go to a ski shop and spend some time chatting with the folks there to find something that will work well for your friend.

You should be able to make it out for in about the ~$400 range to get a really good new intermediate ski that will serve your friend well to progess all the way to be advanced.

Also refer to advice regarding boots too.
