Thoughts on a trip combining Revelstoke and Big White at Christmas

Hi there,

We are thinking of a trip to Canada for Christmas this year - we live a long way away in Hong Kong and have just returned from a great trip in Whistler - whilst the scale of skiing in Whistler was great, the crowds and ski conditions (rain, soft snow / ice mixes lower down) mean we may be willing to look at some places that are a little different.

Firstly I should say there will be a group of 4 of us - I am more intermediate/advanced level - starting to go into the deeper stuff in the trees, don't mind the steep stuff. The other three are probably mid intermediate - happy on moderate blue runs and building confidence towards more exciting stuff.

The idea coming to mind for us may be to combine a trip of around 12-14 days between two resorts - an initial idea for a shortlist would be to spend time between Big White and Revelstoke. We were thinking maybe Big White over the Christmas holidays themselves as there may be more to do and more going on in the village and then heading to Revelstoke after.

Can anyone please give me some advice on the idea? Does this sound like a good plan? Would it be better to spend more time in one resort or the other? What has the snow quality been like at Christmas time for the last few years in both places?

Having spoken to a few people there seems to be a lot of good things being said about Revelstoke. Some of the others in the group are a bit worried about the more advanced terrain reputation it has but then others have said to us that there is plenty to keep a good intermediate occupied for a good few days. I also have slight reservations about the amount of terrain available with only 4 lifts and looking at the ski map - if we were to stick to the groomers for example, would we be just doing the same 2 or 3 blue runs over and over? Some say the scale of the place means that the runs seem endless.

For Big White, this seems like a great choice for intermediates. Again, it would be good to know how much terrain there is to ski - will 6 days here see us covering the same ground a lot? We liked the fact that at Whistler over a week we could ski every day and every run somewhere new. Will Big White (and Revelstoke for that matter) feel limited?

Any thoughts/advice either positive or negative would be appreciated.

Many thanks

James

Welcome to EpicSki!  Wondering why you are only considering Canada instead of North America in general.  Have you heard of Red Mountain?  Have heard it's a good place for intermediates and families.  Definitely pays to get away from major destinations like Whistler during Christmas holidays.

Thanks for the reply. Canada is actually just a bit easier and better value for us to get to over the US. I will look at Red Mountain.

For anyone else viewing, can I also ask for an opinion on Sun Peaks VS Big White. Someone has said this may be better combined with a trip to Revelstoke based on there being more skiable terrain. Be good to have some thoughts on the options
