Hi guys. I'm an advanced beginner or low intermediate, looking for a ski to help overcome my misery in loose, heavy and cut-up snow. I'm happy as a lark on corduroy, up to and including easier blacks. But I'm hopeless in crud. I know that technique is what I lack, but I wonder if a more versatile ski would help. My current skis are Elan Mag 70s, a typical beginner-intermediate frontsider at 114-70-100. I've spotted a few all-mountain skis in the clearance racks, but I'm wondering if the difference is worth a small investment. Candidates include the Atomic Nomad Smoke (121-77-105) and the Volkl RTM 73 (120-73-105). The dimensions aren't radically different, but would the different width, heft and flex patterns make a worthwhile difference when things get trickier underfoot?
(I'm a late beginner, 64 years old but only in my second year on skis, 5-11 tall, 200 pounds. A length recommendation would be appreciated too.)
I'm a flatlander, skiing mostly small hills in Quebec and eastern Ontario.
