Looking for recommendations on Boots. Also, Blizzard Magnum 8.5ti for Southern California?

Hello everyone,

I am an intermediate skier that lives in southern California. I ski trails up to blacks and I want to be skiing off-piste (inbounds for now) before the end of this season. I spend most of my days at Bear Mountain/Snow Summit, but each year I travel to Utah and Northern California for one week. I am 31 yrs. old, 5'8" and 183 lbs.

I am looking for a good pair of boots that will fit narrow feet with high arches. One other requirement for a boot is that it will serve me just as good at the next level. Also, I am not afraid to go with a high flex rating. However, if you feel different please let me know.

I demoed this year’s Blizzard Magnum 8.5ti two days after 20" dropped on Big Bear and I fell in love immediately. Amazing skis! Originally, I was only going to buy boots this season, but that has since change. I would like to purchase a pair before this season ends, but I have some questions ultimately holding me back.  1.) Is 174 right size? Definitely for my height, but what about my weight?  2.) The Mags were demoed when conditions were great. How will these handle in regular southern California conditions (slush and hard pack)?  3.) Is there a ski more suited for where I live but can still rip in Utah and Northern California?

I am open to all suggestions and any advice.

Thank you,

Matt

I am 5'9" and weigh 175. My preference is the 174 Mag 8.5 Ti. I'm a very aggressive skier. The 174 should be fine for you.

As for boots, find yourself a decent boot fitter. I'm not sure what the status of ski retail is in SoCal. A good boot fitter could analyze your foot and other information to give you a boot that will work for you now and the future.

Good luck with your search.

Dennis,

Great advice. I will check around and see if anyone knows of a good boot fitter. Also, I will be purchasing a pair of the 174 mag 8.5s in a few weeks. Can't wait to get back out there on them.

Thank you for the help.

I would look at the specialty shops.  Ask if it has an experienced boot fitter rather than just someone who is just a boot seller.  Going to a box store, like Sports Chalet, is more miss than hit.
