shell stretching

I tried on the Salomon Course 1080's and love 'em but need to downsize to a 25 to get the right fit in the back 3/4 of my foot (it's a roomy boot compared to my Head's). Problem is my toes r curled under nearly a full size. I thought of cutting the toe out of the booty which would probably give enough room but wondered how much the shell could be stretched if that's necessary.
BTW all you guys in racing boots skiing around with the buckles loose to try to get more flex (count me among you) might want to try www.theboosterstrap.com and the Eliminator. The boosterstrap is a strong elastic strap that replaces the power strap. You can keep it tight for good boot to shin contact but it has some give when you hit bumps. It's great! The Eliminatior is a piece of foam that fits on the tongue of your boot and both takes up some volume for us chicken legged types and also allows some give when you hit bumps. It's great too. It does not sound like this boot is a good fit for you. You do not want to have your toes curled up. As a fellow "chicken leg", I can tell you that the solution to all of the problems that you have described is a pair of properly fit foam injection liners like the Conformable liner.

Get a boot in the proper shell size for your foot length, and insert the foam liner. When the foam is injected it will fill in all the space around your ankle and heel. The tounge is also injected, so you will not have excess room in the cuff area either.

Make sure that this is done by a person who has past experience foaming boots. Also make sure that you get a shell that is soft enough for you, because when you lose all the excess space in the liner it will make the boot feel much stiffer than it did before. If it is still too stiff you can always have the shell softened, but if you can get the right flex to start with you are better off.

I downsized in a lange and then stretched the toes for similar reasons. It's hard for me to comment on if you have enough room to stretch. Remember, the boot has to interact with the binding and there's a limit to how much you can stretch it. You can also grind out the heel to gain more room too. (I've done that too).
I would recommend cutting the liner only as a last resort. Liners can be stretched! I've made the mistake twice of cutting the liner. First time never taped it up, forgot it wasn't taped, then got frostbite on one toe. Second time it was cut and taped at a shop but it's never as good, especially if your pushing the length. Cutting is usually a lazy way to make more room because stretching it is much more work.
Maybe gonzostrike or someone very experienced with boots can help.
Either way you need to go to a very good shop that's somewhat convienient because you are in for a lot of work!
Sunday loafer has a good point. I would recommend getting the shell to fit nearly as perfectly as possible before foaming though. Do all stretching, grinding first, then foam for better fit. I may end up foaming too.
Again, you need an excellent shop. Foaming does not always work and a good shop will redo it or not charge. <FONT size="1">

It is not clear to me if Trey has already bought these small boots or not. My impression is that he has tried them on but has not yet purchased them. If this is the case, I would strongly recommend that he not buy them.

There is no need for him to downsize the shell if he gets the foam liners. He should buy the shell that is the proper length for his foot size. The foam will eliminate any slipping of the heel or ankle that he has experienced in the past.

If the foam liners are a cost problem, I would still recommend that he get the proper length boot, then pad or "shim" the liner rather than trying to grind or stretch the shell.

It is not a good idea to try to stretch the length of a boot to accomodate toes if that is what you had in mind. It can seriously mess up your bindings tolerances and potentially jepordize their proper release.

Thanks for the info guys. On a lark brought on by the pro-Atomic stance around here I tried on some Beta-Race 9-58's in a 26 and am impressed so far though i haven't skiied them yet (they were only 259.00 on sale!). their a bit roomy but i think some foaming, a Zip-fit or even just some heel pads will fix that. Now if i can just shake this cold..... (((
