Desert powder skiing AZ Snowbowl 2-9-13

It looked bleak in December but this year has been epic for AZ skiing.  The last storm dropped 36" and we are skiing a 70" base.  Snow total so far is 172" (most falling since Dec 21).  The video below is from the storm last weekend on 2/9.  It snowed all day and was filling in tracks every run.  Trees were prime and people were saying the snow is the best its been since 2010 season.

Pretty sweet. Is that the Flagstaff Snowbowl?

Yep, it is in Flagstaff.  You can see the Grand Canyon from the top.

There was an interesting thread a while back about the Supreme Court refusing to hear the case against the Snowbowl making snow.

I have a cousin in Flagstaff.  I need to drop in on them sometime.  This makes me prefer doing it sometime in February!

Cool. I didn't realize you could see the GC from there. I love ski resorts with unique contrasts like that.

Nice video, too! Except the whole time I was trying to use my pointer to guide you into those trees on the side biggrin.gif - looked primetime! Thanks for the post.

Years ago I hiked to the top of the mt in the fall. There was an ammo storage "farm" several miles to the south and west I think. When I was up there they started exploding out of date (?) ordnance. It was quite a show. Then as I'm eating lunch at the saddle of the two peaks I look up and a fighter jet is only a few hundred feet above me.
Later I stayed with a couple and he used to patrol that depot on horseback decades earlier.

People crap all over Snowbowl (literally, they use reclaimed water for snow making) but the mountain is a really beautiful place that rivals some of the CO and NM resorts for terrain quality but on a small scale.  Their only downfall is the main lift speed and lift alignments which aren't optimal but not something that bothers me.

A pic from the 2/9 storm, main lift Agassiz near the base area.  Main mountain is obscured by the storm and fog.

Very cool, and the one that plays after.

Skiing pow amidst the Ponderosa pines!

The San Francisco Peaks are beautiful. Rode horses in the foothills there a bunch of times.
