So the common thought these days is you must have a shaped ski to carve and ski well...

I have a VHS from a while back, and took a few of the best bits and made this.

A few people just shared this on my Facebook, I wondered where it had come from! Great skiing for sure, so much energy!

The back half of his skis are in the air a lot.Ott+Wedeln.gif

Seems like with modern carvers the metal stays in contact with the snow a lot more.

I believe he's doing a pivot turn where he switches to the new turn quicker on purpose.

He's almost doing hop turns on the short radius ones (and then towards the end he is actually doing hop turns).  From the snow spray you can see how he's setting the edge pretty sharply and then releasing it to rebound into the next turn.  Not arc-to-arc 'carving' in the modern definition, but when the skis are on the snow they're more or less following tip to tail.  Certainly a VERY skilled pilot.

You can carve just fine on 'straight' skis... you just have to be going pretty fast and making decently large turns.  When he opens it up more (e.g. 0:15-0:30 in that video) you can see the turns are much smoother.
