Alu ski pole slightly bent at base: change ?

Hi,

One of my Volkl Alu ski poles (16mm diameter) got slightly bent about 2 inches up from the disc.

Pole is still 100% functionnal, but is there a risk the pole will brake; should I change my poles because of this ?

Thx

There is always a risk the pole will break...if it doenst affect your skiing....dont worry about it.

You can always try to straighten it too...put it in a vice, and clamp it straight.  This might break the pole and will weaken it further thou...but again, I still wouldnt worry about it.

Instead of the vise/bending thing, try this:  Find a wooden pole or tree and, holding the handle, tap the pole against the tree/pole at the backside of the bend.  If you are hitting the bend exactly right and use just enough force and are patient it should straighten out.  Start with light taps and ramp up the force of the tap until the bend starts to slowly straighten.  Be patient and don't slam the thing into the pole.

And don't worry about it breaking until it does.

My Scott pistol grip poles have been bent for years.  Got them jammed under the chair one day long ago.  I'm not worried about it.

sounds like the bend is not too sharp. here's the thing, already touched on. aluminum has no memory, so you cannot return it to its original position, on a molecular level, like you could steel. so if you straighten it, you actually weaken it further, though that may not be so weak as to be a concern (pole breaks, makes a sharp end, stabs skier in the stomach).

Ghost is true to form. smile.gif  I can just see it.

Thx for the replies.

I'll just keep on using it as it is, keep an eye open for deals at the end of the season.
