Time for new skis!

I've been using a set of Head CarveX 180cm skis that were given to me by a buddy when I started skiing 2 years ago. They ride just fine, but I'm looking at replacing them at the end of the year. Despite being a little long for my height/weight (I'm 5'10, 180lbs) I actually found myself preferring the longer ski.

So here are my questions...

1) What ski would you recommend?? I ski entirely groomed runs, I am in Ontario so the mid winter is pretty much pure ice. I am not an aggressive skier, but I like a little speed and do venture into the blacks if my mood and conditions are right.

2) Should I stick with something in the 170-180 range or should I go shorter??

This being my first ski "purchase", I was a little lost when I went into the shop. The sales staff were pushy, just looking for a sale rather than helping me find the right ski for me. Somehow me looking for a moderately priced casual ski for groomers translated into me wanting an $800 pair of 105mm twins? I would much rather go in there with a bit of knowledge of specifically what I am looking for.

Maybe you should try a different store.

It's either this one shop or Sport Chek...We have SFA for good quality shops around here.

Good for you for recognizing the store was not really working in your best interest.

Check out the EpicSki articles on buying equipment.  Click on Articles on the menu bar.

Sport Chek? Guess you're somewhere in Canada then. You might at least take a look at Sport Chek. If you get a good salesperson -- and you appear capable of telling the difference -- you might get some good advice, and maybe the right ski. They can be OK, in my limited experience. I've bought some stuff there, and I had a free Sport Chek coupon, so I got my skis tuned there this fall (Kanata ON location). They did a decent job.
