Skiing has become a performance art (?), if you will. It is almost like we have different mediums that are all skiing but so different in the required talents. To be "THE BEST" just will not happen anymore and maybe never could. Could Snowshoe Thompson win against the miners in a straight race? Could Hoji or Pollard win the Kandahar? Does it matter? All great, all memorable artists in their field. Is a painter a sculptor, or a dancer the greatest artist?
There cannot be a best except on one venue on one day when all things get equaled out. You have to marvel at the skills of the racers, jibbers, big mountain skiers, aerialists, extreme skiers, and bumpers; they all pull off stuff that is imposable without a lot of training. How do you think they would all do at ballet skiing? The winner would probably be the orthopedic people.
That so many really great skiers from all disciplines have come from racing should tell us something though. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the junior freestyle programs in the future though. Does a really good junior need both? (That will make an interesting discussion.)
Back to lurking now.
