Down Vest vs. Primaloft Jacket

Thread Starter

What is typically warmer?  800 fill Down vest or a 60gm primaloft jacket? Assuming it is not wet.

Mmmm.  Probably the down vest but it would be close.

Depends on the fit. If you have gaping neck or arm holes, if will not be as warm. I have both. All thing equal, down is awesome. But a jacket and vest can be so different.

Old thread I know (at least it's still from this year, lol), but I came across it so I want to put these numbers down for anyone who searches in the future.

Primaloft One 0.92 dry / .90 wet, clo/oz

Primaloft Sport 0.79 dry /.72 wet, clo/oz

Synergy .73 dry / .61 wet, clo/oz

ECO .68 dry/ .60 wet, clo/oz

550 down is about the same as primaloft one, 800 is 1.1 and up to 1.6 on higher quality. However the trade off is as soon as it gets wet it drops to worse than nothing.

That is per weight, but since down is puffier for the same weight it'll feel thicker, so if the thickness is the same, primaloft is warmer.

If it's an outer.......then jacket, hands down, discussion over.  A vest will absolutely let the cold air in and you'll feel cold regardless of the fill.

If a midlayer, then it depends.  I run hot and down can get wet from sweat, in which case it's then useless.  Synthetic will work better in that situation.  If you run cold then it's a bit different.  HOWEVER, if you run cold then your arms will create a chill for you because of the vest.

Better off going with the jacket regardless.  Far less potential heat problems.
