Need help choosing the right ski!

So I'm buying a ski for my girlfriend. We live in chicago and ski around here, but we will be going to colorado soon for a skiing trip. She is 5'6, 125lbs and a beginner/lower intermediate. I narrowed down to the following skis:

and

Just wondering what you guys would recommend? Also should I go with the 149cm or 156cm?

Any advice is helpful and appreciated and I thank you in advance!

It's probably safer to err on the shorter side.  I'd vote for the 149s.  Since I'm cheap, I'd opt for the Heads, as I think the skis sound pretty comparable.  There are very few truly bad skis manufactured these days.  Whatever she gets will be at least as good as a random rental.

What is she doing for boots?  They matter far more than skis.

No question, her boots are more important than the skis. But the next most important thing is actually the binding which attaches her to the ski. Bindings matter because they can greatly affect balance (I.e. her control, comfort and confidence). Knowing the exact difference between these two models, If you're set on buying one of these ski-binding pkgs, I'd strongly recommend the Head ski and binding combo. It has a forward binding tilt or ramp angle, that's much more middle of the road for women, than the binding on the other ski (which has over 2 times the heel height!).

Anyway, If you're not sure about her boots, I'd recommend you have her visit Drew at Viking Ski Shop on Fullerton Ave in Chicago. Great guy, very caring with new skiers. Might want to even check out packages with him before you pull the trigger online. The lowest price is not always the smartest move. Let him know I referred you and she'll be in good hands.

Regarding the skis length, for her height and weight (and most likely her foot size), I'd go with the 156 instead of the 149 cm. Her center of mass is a little too high for the shorter ski. The 156 will give her more time to react, especially in a little fresh, wet or choppy snow.

Best wishes for your trip to Colorado!

Good for you to make sure you GF is set up for a great trip!  The Scandinavian Ski Shop in Glenview is a good place too.  My brother-in-law has been going there for equipment for him (intermediate) and his son (advanced) for quite a while.  Both have hard to fit feet.  You might get lucky and she can find a "new old stock" boot and skis for a good deal locally.

How long have you been skiing?  Have she been at high altitude before?
