Need help choosing the right ski!

Thread Starter

So I'm buying a ski for my girlfriend. We live in chicago and ski around here, but we will be going to colorado soon for a skiing trip. She is 5'6, 125lbs and a beginner/lower intermediate. I narrowed down to the following skis:

http://www.levelninesports.com/Head-Mya-No-2-Womens-Skis-Wtyrolia-Literail-9-Bindings?sub_id=23080

and

http://www.levelninesports.com/Atomic-2012-Cloud-6-Skis-Wxtl9-Bindings?sub_id=20905

Just wondering what you guys would recommend? Also should I go with the 149cm or 156cm?

Any advice is helpful and appreciated and I thank you in advance!

Not a bad price.

But I'd like to move her up to a bit wider ski. something in the 76-80 waist. Take a lesson or two ont he new skis before you go out west.

IMO 149cm is too short for someone who is 5' 6" ... even a beginner.

Better a tad short than a tad long.  Besides, if she progresses quickly, she'll probably outgrow the capability of the skis by the end of the season (these are both fairly low-level skis).  If you get a season its worth the price paid and you can sell them next year and upgrade her.

I assume she has only been on rental skis...what length has she been skiing on?  For a first pair, I would stick with what she's comfortable with, not something she'll "grow into".  That's like buying a too-big bike for your kid, becuause he'll "grow into it"    :-)

I think that ^^^ is the key.  If she's been on shorter skis, go with the 149s.

For comparison:

     I'm 5'2" ... chin-height would be about 137 cms ... my beginner skis were 138 cm

At 5'6" ... her chin-height would be about 148 cms

My beginner skis were Atomics.  They were light, easy to maneuver.  I could focus on what I needed to learn, not on trying to keep the skis out of each other's way.

I've read good things about the Atomic Cloud 7 and heard good reviews of the Cloud 9 from advanced skiers.  But I don't think you would go wrong with either ski.  Expect her to outgrow the skis, in terms of skills, in a year or so.  At those prices, you can sell them at a ski swap and get most of your money back.
