No, No, NO!

Fly in near Steamboat.  If you are flying in you can afford a bit more for the best.  Check out Steamboat Powder Cats and reserve yourself a space.

/Steamboat already has 144 inches (12 feet), and there is a bit coming tonight.  Also it's their 50th anniversary!

//It's pretty hard for me to find the season to date snow totals for CB.  However the groomers choice today is "Poverty Gulch"

///If you go to Monarch (108"/100% open), you are going to love it.  If you love a "late '60's-early '80's ski area.  That's my speed.

Your suggested CB and Monarch can be fantastic.

CB is a mid sized ski resort with famous expert skiing.  They've had a weak snow year so far (85" to date) but there is plenty of time for things to turn around.

Monarch is great small ski area.  Good skiing to be had but don't expect high speed lifts, long runs or fancy lodges.  Snowfall has been good at Monarch this year.

As for keeping things cheap...  Gunnison flights are rarely cheap but alternative 4hr drive from DEN isn't great.  Cheap lodging can be found in Gunnison but you'll have to plan on driving 40-60 min to CB and Monarch.  CB is a great town to stay in but you'll pay for it.
