New skis...Am I becoming a gear whore?

For the old timers here, you might have wondered we're I've been, since I haven't posted in quite a while...

In truth, since March 2011 I've re-entered, after a fashion, into the "rat race" territory...

Long commute (until march 2011, and for the previous 5 years, I've worked very close to home), long hours at customer sites, stress...lots of free time lost, the so called work&life balance completely skewed into favour of the "work" part of the equation ...

But some good has come out of it, and well at least I've got some extra "pocket money", so that, in the just passed 2011-2012 season I've been able to ski more than I've been skiing in the past, albeit not with my friend Mr. P.. ...and finally...new skis!!!

"Mr. N. with his long coveted, long awaited...186 Goats."

I had been "window shopping" these skis since February 2012, shown at a ski shop near the "base (home) ski area" I spent the winter 2011-2012 at; first at full price, with their shorter brothers (176) and a pair of withe-red-black 184 (IIRC) Mantras...Full price was too much for my pockets, so this had to remain a window shopping dream...at leas tuntil april 2012 when, suddenly, sales boosted in the skis were now being offered at half of the price...still a window shopping dream to me but more withing my grasp...

An excerpt, late March...from a conversation with one of my sons "Hey son, what would you think of those "white-red-black" skis?"  "mmmh dad. what are those for" "well, to ski off-piste, son"

"Mmmh I'd rather go for the Black-Gold ones"....

Come May, June, July, August.. and the three pairs of skis were still there, still at half the price...September, I could no more resist..I told myself, if next timeI'll be there those will still be unsold, I must do something...

And there they were, still unsold, all three...A brief chat with the shop owner (and mountain guide) about the characteristics of the two models and lengths, what kind of snow they were indicated for (I think you all know either model very well, know the differences, the qualities) made me lean toward the Goat

September...Even though the "money factor" was still a concern to me, the next week, while at home, I made up my mind and called up the shop...and asked if the guy could set aside the one of the Goats for me until next time I'd be there...He agreed, now I just had to save the money for the buy (also for the bindings...)

Did  I mention "rat racing"? Or should I say it's been good (for me) karma? A colleague of mine fell while road biking with a bunch of friends and broke a shoulder (I feel really sorry for him, at 60 y.o, he's going to take a hell of a time to heal back)...due to that, someone had to step in into his week of "standby call"...et voilà, the money for the skis has arrived. I of course owe him
...

Now...the skis are still unmounted and I have an open question..which bindings to mount on them? I guess I'll go for the Jesters, but I'm really tempted by the Baron...mmmhhh choices, choices, difficult choices...

Gear whore? Nope. Those are freaking sweet skis.

Gear whore?????  maybe a no-belt GW, but puh-leeeeeze,  unless you buy at least two new pair of skis/boots per year, you're not even in the discussion.  There's hope however, you've taken the first tentative step ...... do you have what it takes?  Do you have the focus, the desire, the will to crush the competition, to go all the way???

Congrats - great skis!

For those who might have wondered...

The skis have been mounted with Barons.

Not my first choice but...no other wide brake binding was available at the shop (would have preferred Jesters...) by the time I chucked up the funds to mount them...

In any case the shop owner was so kind to price the barons the same as the jesters...

This way, oooh I am soo unlucky...I should/could be able to skin my way up the peaks a bit here and there, if push came to shove... ;-)
