Jackson Hole early Feb. stay? flight?

Wondering if anyone has any good ideas on places to stay in JH. Not looking for posh, but not totally spartan/hostal either. Also, is Jackson airport the only realistic way to get to the area? Are there any major airports "near", or is it basically the Jackson airport?

Last, most important, best trails/stashes/ect.?

Cheers!

Here's the guide to JH.

In terms of getting there, your only real options are to either fly into JH or fly to Salt Lake and have a long drive (5 hours+).  Personally, I think you'll appreciate the short drive/taxi from the JH airport...

Lots of places to stay, some really spartan (the HostelUS, about $89/night, and newly "refurbished") to pretty swank (the Four Seasons).  You can also find a range of lodging in Jackson itself.  What are you really looking for?

There are a lot of reasonably priced hotels in town of Jackson. About ten miles from the resort. Lots of buses. I have alway driven so can't advise on flights.

There is also Idaho Falls airport (about 90 minutes from JH) and Rock Springs airport (about 3 hours from JH).  I don't really recommend Rock Springs.  It is really small and I got stuck there bad the only time I flew out of there.  There is a shuttle from IF and I have gotten good cheap flights on several occasions.  BTW SLC is usually about 4.5-5 hours, not 5+.

Trust TPJ, he lives there. I'm just a wannabe resident. Any cheap real estate?

I've skied Jackson since age 14 (now 49). The only reasonable travel option is flying into JH. DON'T do otherwise, it is just NOT worth it. Watch for wildlife on drive from the airport to Teton Village. Aside from the obvious 1000s of wintering elk, you should see plenty of deer (watch hills on right of road) and quite possibly moose.

Other than just 1 trip, I have stayed at the Hostel. At first, because as a kid it was all I could afford. Now as a biz exec, I choose it over the others due to the funky vibe, and stumbling distance home from the Mangy Moose (best apres ski bar in the US, if not N.Am). The above mentioned renovations make it very comfortable. If you're solo or a two-some, rent a "Cowboy King" room which is a wee bit nicer than the standard bunk room. FYI, no TV in room. That's OK because you'll be too tired from skiing and Mangy Moosing to care. Try it, bet you like it. Spend the difference in money you'd spend at The Four Season and sign up with the resort's backcountry guide service for a day. Bet you like that too. Still not convinced? Then, stay at Hotel Terra. The BEST hotel option in the village. Style, amenities, and location (directly next door to The Hostel and also Mangy Moose stumbling distance).

Stashes. Read the guide mentioned above, it is an excellent overview. A couple additions the author doesn't mention because, I'm guessing, he's only talking in-bounds terrain, you must hit:

  • Hike Headwall and ski anything/everything. The obvious shots are the first two as you finish the climb (12 minutes for this Florida flatlander; so not bad). They lead you to the top of the gondy station. Real nice stuff. Follow the traverse for more shots, but I would only do that if you befriend someone who's skied it before (I suggest buying a few Irish Car Bombs in the Mangy for likely suspects as a way to meet some friends for tomorrow's ski day).
  • If you were successful befriending someone with local knowledge, and the snow is good or is has snowed, see if you can find someone willing to lead you to Why Not which is a super sweet OB slot skiers right of the big rock buttress that is on the right side of the Hobacks entrance. Don't try to find it on your own. Do try to find someone to take you. Here's what Why Not skis like on a 16" untracked morning... Jackson Hole Epic Powder Run

ENJOY!!!
