Hi All, I have been spying the site for a few months now and I just wanted to say hello. I recently went up to Mammoth and finally got an opportunity to ski a mid-fat for the first time. I have been reading about theses type of skis on this site and thought I would give them a try. Wow.  They were better than I imagined . History . I consider myself an advanced skier and I am 6'2 ,195 . I tend to stay on piste , but I will venture off occasionally,  the current skis I have are 1990 Atomic Arc SL3  200 cm . I have been renting skis for the last few seasons including Fischer KOA's I think they were 175 . I know I have been out of touch as far as technology goes.

Demo 1 .   Volkl Mantra 177

Holy Cow . These skis gave me unbelievable confidence at speed on , super stable , Easy turns . tried them on a few mogul runs , they worked better than I thought they would. The most powder I saw was about 4-6 inched and the skis responded great,  I used them for two days and just thought they were awesome. I did not get a chance to go in any deep powder which was unfortunate but I will try them again on a better day. The next pair I plan on trying are the highly touted Bonafides. I hope to try them with a little more powder on the mountain to see how they go . I might also try the Prophet 98, or Cham 97 if I can but after two days with the Mantra's I may have already found my next pair of skis. I can't believe how great they were. This is a great time to be a skier .

Next Up Demo 2 .  Bonafides

One question , Do you think with my height , weight , ability , and terrain . Are 175 CM the right size?

Thanks all Great site.

I am just about the same size as you (6'3"/200lbs) and I use 184cm Mantras as my daily driver in Tahoe.  Based on your height, weight and skill level, you might want to demo the Mantra at 184 before you make your final decision.  In the end, it really comes down to personal preference and what fits your skiing style best.

I have put about 8 days on the Mantras this season and I really like them on the hard pack and in the crud.  I got to try them out on a couple powder days (12"-16") before Christmas and I wasn't super impressed with them in the powder.  I've never skied the Bones, but I've only heard very good things about them.  I am interested to see how you like the Bones since we're similar in size and it sounds like you have a similar skill level and skiing style.

Thanks for the reply. I hope I can demo the Bones soon . They do have a set of 180cm up at mammoth . I will try to demo them and let you know how they skied. Thanks again. I will also try the 184 Mantras if I can.
