Beginner in Aspen

Thread Starter

Hello. This looks like a great forum!

I'm a decent athlete, but I've never been skiing before. I'm a 34-year-old male in fairly good shape.

I'll be spending 5 days in Aspen the last week in January.

My options for lessons include a 3-day Adult Group Lesson or a Full Day Private Lesson.

Any opinions on which option would be more worthwhile?

Also, for those who have been to Aspen, is Snowmass or Buttermilk a better mountain to get the lessons?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Last week of Jan @ buttermilk is X Games. You will Probably get a private on any of the group lessons anyway. You'll have a great time!

Buttermilk is one of the best beginner hills on the planet!

First, welcome to EpicSki and congratulations for wanting to learn this awesome sport!

Buttermilk will have more to offer first-time skiers.

If you have the opportunity to do a 3-day lesson, I'd do that.  Getting coached, going to practice on your own, and do that for three days will allow you to make progress quickly.  It'll also be good to meet some other students and be able to feed off of each other.

Have a great time and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the great advice!

I did the 3-day Adult Beginner's Magic lesson, and it was amazing. It was almost like private lessons - it was only me and one other person with the instructor.

I think it would be hard to find a better mountain for beginners than Buttermilk... what an awesome place. It wasn't crowded at all, and the instructors are world class. I had never skied before and was able to progress to level 4 after only three days.

Apparently Buttermilk and Telluride have the best green trails in the country, so maybe I'll go there next. I'm officially addicted!

Good Job!  Now keep at it!

Lot's of people discount Buttermilk because of it's image as a beginner hill,   But the new Tiehack lift is really nice, it's empty 99% of the time and it services some very nice easy black/blue terrain.  Buttermilk West has the best car picnic area for people with little kids, that I've ever seen.  You can back your car right up to some picnic tables and ski down to a nice easy HSQ.  The old Cafe Suzette is now a warming hut with restrooms, but there are no ticket sales.
