We’re pleased to announce that EpicSki.com has been acquired by Mountain News Corporation, which operates the #1 most visited ski and snowboard website, OnTheSnow.com, and the year-round headquarters for mountain resort information, MountainGetaway.com.

Mountain News Corporation is committed to ensuring that EpicSki.com will continue to be the online home for dedicated skiers and the leading online resource for ski information and community discussion. To this end, we are looking forward to partnering with Joan Rostad, who will continue to manage the site and contribute content, and with Huddler, EpicSki.com’s existing technology platform, to ensure that the community experience remains consistent.

We expect the partnership between EpicSki.com and Mountain News Corporation will benefit the community and contributors by connecting EpicSki.com to our extensive ski industry information and bringing additional resources to the site to continue to enhance the community.  EpicSki.com has a proud heritage stemming from its founding in 1998 by AC and built on by Joan Rostad (nolo), the moderators and contributors and we look forward to continuing to build the forum in the future!

Best wishes for a happy new year,

Chad Dyer

Chief Operating Officer

The sale of EpicSki to MNC is the best possible outcome I could have dreamed of for our community. The site gains amazing synergies through the new ownership, while staying on the same mission of being The Site for Dedicated Skiers, with the same admin/moderation team sticking around and powered by the same thoughtful and on-purpose technology we have come to expect from Huddler to keep us on the cutting edge of forum software. We'll definitely notice the new ownership in the cool new features and benefits that will emerge in the course of time, and someday we'll take for granted EpicSki's place in the MNC family of ski-centric sites, but other than that, it's going to be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." So while this is very big news today, as EpicSki continues to be the welcoming hangout for savvy skiers that it always has been, we'll all go back to forgetting about who pays the bills. I guarantee it!

Without further ado, please give an EPIC welcome to the guys and gals from MNC who are starting the New Year 2013 in the best possible way -- with EpicSki!

So EPIC is now owned by an advertising company that is owned by Vail Skiing Corp?

Hmmm!  popcorn.gif

I'm also very excited about EpicSki's new home with Mountain News, they struck me as the ideal parent at this stage of the community's evolution.

When I started EpicSki in my tiny Tahoe apartment, I never imagined it would become anything near the scale and vibrancy it is today. For the first several months, I was the only person in this forum -- having numerous usernames and discussing the finer points of skiing with myself, hoping others would find the content useful enough to stick around.

It grew slowly at first with a few die-hards, then a series of true skiing guru's like Ott and Bob Barnes (and too many others to name) started hanging out and taking the substance of the conversation to an entirely different level. Others contributed personality and enthusiasm and the community grew.

When I stepped aside and handed the reigns over to a new team lead by Joan (Nolo), I could not have been more proud watching how the community flourished. And I feel the same confidence and pride in seeing EpicSki's new team take over.

But at the heart of EpicSki is and always has been the members of the community, not the oversight structure. What makes me most enthusiastic about this next stage is that the new team understands and supports this view.

I'm making a return to skiing myself this year, so am excited to have EpicSki as a home to come back to.

Hope to see you guys on the mountain!

So.... Marcia wants to know if MNC is going to provide the funds to restart the EpicSkiAcademy....

Congrats Joan and welcome to the new owners. I'm excited at the opportunities this could open up for EpicSki!

Welcome Chad and Mountain News. The resources you bring will certainly enhance our community. I too am excited by the possibilities.  Congratulations to nolo, Epic stakeholders, moderation and staff. A specially shout out to all of our contributors and all our members without which this would not be such a vibrant, welcoming community. Last but not lest, a special nod should go to AC for the time and effort he took to launch this site. Thanks AC, nice to see you posting again.

Why is this a benefit?

This thread should be interestingwink.gif

I find it pretty cool that Vail found value in the site and that several people I've actually met through this site are part of making it happenicon14.gif

I have no idea how this will work out long term, but my mind is wide open.

What a long strange trip it's been.  This site has been the home for many opinions and ways of expression...all with the common interest of skiing.  It has evolved from a hobby started by AC, and has grown to a content-rich site built by its members and dedicated to giving back to the community, what you put in. and then some.   The resources and expertise that come with this acquisition by a major ski media company, changes nothing in the mission, but changes everything in the opportunity for Epicski to deliver better content and puts the members in a position to sway even more influence over equipment, resort services, instruction and deals.   Members  quietly acting as resort ambassadors,  equipment experts, ski pros, boot guys  photographers and just skiers writing a trip report can perhaps gain even more meaningful recognition as journalistic sources.

It is the content, tone and credibility, and even the disagreement and debate that makes this place valuable to skiers, many of whom only read and don't post.  This site has seen many changes over the years, and this one seems natural.  I'm looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out.  For now, my understanding is, not much is changing.

For the doubters, consider that the other site you probably post on is also owned by a media company.

Great question. Certainly Vail can afford to restart ESA. Will they now host ESA at all Vail properties?

I, for one, welcome our new Vail overlords.

Excellent news!!!

Congrats Joan!  I am confident the show will go on uninterrupted. The community of members and the cult of personality is what makes Epic, epic.

Thanks, everyone!

Indeed.  Hopefully that doesn't change after the initial "nothing's changing for now" routine, which typically happens after websites change ownership.

Very.........cautiously..........optimistic.  Time will tell.

Sure glad to hear that Joan will still be at the heart of this site!  She is the vital difference!

I guess this brings new meaning to the Vail Epic Pass.

Onward, through the fog

Good luck Joan!

Let's hope EpicSki remains the best place on the web for Skiers.

(The best place in the world remains Alta)

One of the essential principles of skiing is moving forward, or as my dear advisor Yoda used to say, "If the designers had meant for the skis to go sideways they would have turned them up on the sides." Over the years I have found that just about everything that guy said can be an analogy for life, marriage, child rearing, horse training, EpicSki...

Thanks for getting it!

Progress! Thanks AC and Joan for including me in the journey.

I am excited, like Dave, I have been here since (near) the beginning. When I heard about this, the very first thought was "Hmmmm"..then "well that makes sense" then, "Wow, this could be really good..." I think of the possibilities of being backed by a company that understands, live and breaths the ski industry is a good thing and I am looking forward to the next evolution.

Wow. You folks are naive! Vail just wants the URL EpicSki.com.

In typical VR purchasing fashion, nothing will change for the first year (or six months), but don't expect this site to exist for anything other than pointing traffic to either OnTheSnow.com or one of VR's other online properties next season.

Yep your still here,

Saw the news on that (Other Ski forum) and thought I better check in.

Has it been almost 3 years since I skied with ya'll?

Yes a site with 40,000 plus visitors a day that ranks highest among all ski sites for the majority of gear queries--an industry (retail) Vail is getting into--has no value at all beyond Trademarks for the word "Epic". rolleyes.gif

EpicSki doesn't really compete with OnTheSnow directly right now, no reason they would be merged. Perhaps we will share resources in the future--combining their great resorts knowledge base with our gear and instructional knowledge--but EpicSki is here to stay.

Guess you don't know the history of Vail Resorts tylrwnzl! I suggest you brush up on all their prior acquisitions ... CME ... Breeze ... SkiReport.com ... Gart Sports .... Speciality Sports ... etc.
