Parking in Jackson Hole

Thread Starter

We are headed to Jackson Hole this weekend and I'm thinking of renting a car (I do have one reserved) but not sure about parking.  Has anyone parked at Jackson Hole, it appears they discourage that and encourage use of shuttles.  There is a charge to park, shuttles are free, etc.

The place we are staying does have a shuttle but it leaves only once in the morning at 8:30 and one trip back at 4:30.  A half hour before and after the lifts open/close.  I prefer to get there a earlier and stay longer before heading out too.

The JH website says there is free parking for cars of 3 or more and for some of the days we will have four skiing and some only two - my wife and daughter won't ski as many days as my son and I will.  I'm not opposed to paying for the parking but if it's a major hassle then I'll cancel the car reservation and take the shuttles.

Anyone who has been there have any thoughts/ideas/recommendations?  We are staying in Jackson.

Thanks for any help,

We have a great bus system to and from Teton Village from Jackson.  That's one option if your accommodations are near a bus stop.  Takes roughly 30 minutes to go from most of the town bus pickups to the Village and vice versa.

If you want to park in the Village, it's not that much of a hassle as long as you don't mind paying $15 per day.  The parking is close to the lifts at the base and as long as you get there before 9:30am (which it sounds like you would do), there's usually plenty of space right in the main lot by the tram tower.

Have fun.  The skiing is great.

FWIW, I go to Jackson every year btw Xmas and New Years, and arrive at the base early enough to park right at the base (for a price) within 50-100 yds of the tram.  No parking problems at all, but don't know if they've changed the setup this year.  Others on this forum will know.

I think you'll find the car useful, for the days when your wife/daughter are NOT skiing! They can drive to do other things, like go see the elk herd outside of the village proper.

When I was there, I use the village shuttle for skiing and the car for sightseeing. It's some spectacular countryside there your family might enjoy seeing.

Isn't there a remote parking you can park for free and then take a short shuttle to the base? There was one a few years back. Not sure if that's changed.

In any case, on days you have more than 3, the car pool lot is pretty nice.

On days you don't have 3, you have multiple options:

1) take the hotel shuttle both ways.

2) take the shuttle one way to (or from) the base and have your wife pick you up later (or drop off) if the schedule doesn't match that of the shuttle

3) If you are on the village shuttle route, that's pretty convenient. The village shuttle runs a lot more frequently than your hotel shuttle. But even if you're not ON that route, you can also arrange to have you wife to meet you at the shuttle pick up and drop off point to get you back to your hotel.

Thanks Bob and DOCEVG for the quick answers...I think I may park the first day just to get there early, kind of excited to get there, wont have to lug my daughters gear....and then look at the bus option when it's just me and my son.  If I understand it right if there are 3 or more in the car then there is no fee to park, that may be only certain places though.

@at_nyc; thanks for the info...yes there is still a free lot with a shuttle...I will keep the car, seems to make sense and we will figure out what works to get to the mountain the days my wife and daughter aren't skiing...

Thanks for all the great info...

The Ranch lot at Teton Village is free for cars with 3 or more people in them.  It costs $5 if there are less than 3 people.  It is a pretty short walk from this lot to the lifts or there is a free shuttle that will take you from the lot to the base of The Tram.  At night you get to ride the "Disco Bus" back to your car.  The $15 lot that Bob mentioned is closer to the lifts and you get charged the same regardless of how many people are in the car.  The bus from town costs $3/person each way.  There is a remote lot called the Stilson Lot where you can park your car for free and ride a free bus into The Village.  You can get free coffee there before 9:00am.  The busses run pretty frequently in the morning and afternoon.  They slow down a bit mid day and after 7:00 or so at night.  You can probably find a bus schedule on-line by googling START Bus Jackson Hole.

Have a great trip!
