What do you expect crowds to be like next Friday, 12/21?

At your local ski resort, are you expecting next Friday (12/21) to be a busy day kicking off Christmas, or do you think the crowds will not start until after Christmas?

I refuse to ski in Christmas crowds, but my spouse wants to go skiing next Friday. Marketing folks at my resort would no doubt tell me that there will be no crowds on 12/21.

Some schools are out tomorrow while others get out the 21st...I am sure it varies by resort, but I have always found crowds to be worse between X-mas and NY compared to the week before Christmas...unless you have something better to do, I`d give it a go.

The blackout days on  passes agrees with MEfree30's analysis.  for example on vail's passes 12/26-12/31 are blacked out; which you can correspond to the expected "crowd" days.

But this is also contrasted with the state of your mountain and the state of your local economy.

If the mountain isn't fully open, then daily pass holders will not be going up, and saving their 1trip/year vacation for a 100% open mountain.  So the  mountain will be be empty on blackout days as both passholders aren't coming, and daily pass aren't coming (just leaving the mountain with a higher portion of foreign tourists).

Ha!  While doing everything possible to ensure that there will be maximum crowds.  That's marketing, eh?

Wait.  Crowds in Montana?

My avatar is slightly confusion. I'm native to Montana and learned to ski at Big Mountain, which is now Whitefish Mountain. I live out in Seattle now and ski at Crystal Mountain.

So yes, I sadly have to deal with crowds today.

I think you are safe on 12/21.  It's still a weekday and Christmas is looming -- shopping and getting the tree up, all that.  However, beginning 12/22 people are going to start arriving and maybe hit the slopes the next day, DEPENDING ON THE RESORT and how easy it is to get to.  Then, the real horror will hit 12/27.  People who prefer to spend their Christmas with extended family have cleaned up the house and wrapping paper mess, loaded up the car and NOW THEY ARE HERE.

That's my prediction base on 40 years of skiing.

I expect it to be 45 degrees, cloudy, with massive bare spots on the mountain - if there's any snow left at all

I don't expect crowds at all; or me, for that matter

In the past, when Christmas was on a Saturday, there were negligible crowds the day before, on Friday 12/24, so when Friday is 4 days before Christmas day, I'd expect it to be like any other weekday

I'm banking on the crowds not starting until that Saturday.  I have the day off that Friday so I'm hoping to make a weekday trip up to Tahoe if possible.

Of course, if the world does end on Friday, ski resort crowds will probably be negligible.

Crowd arrives on the 26th.

+1

EXCEPT...

That we are having such storms this week. If skiing is not possible Mon and maybe even Tuesday in this blizzard we're having, I'd expect Wednesday to be pretty busy. Maybe by Friday the excitement will have died down. I do find in general here in western WA that pre-Xmas is pretty reasonable, and Xmas break is busy.

If conditions are good, no real skier will let a little thing like the end of the world keep him from skiing
