Tahoe Donner to say Virginia City for 16 kids, 4 adults

Our State junior XC team (16 kids, 2 coaches, 2 parents) are spending 4 weeks at Tahoe Donner. What would you suggest they see or do in the area. They are a bit stuck with only 2 Ford Escapes and so many people so TART or resort shuttles are a must. Needless to say, with 20 airfares etc, $ is tight.

Sugar bowl runs a free shuttle from the east end of truckee up to sugar bowl ski area, including a stop at Northwoods--which is the entrance to Tahoe Donner subdivision.  google truckee sugar bowl bus for a schedule.  I think they are pretty liberal about letting people on and off who might not be skiing at Sugar bowl--it runs in both directions all day.  From that shuttle you can connect to the TART buses to Lake Tahoe, and Squaw and Alpine Meadows shuttles.   The trick is getting from Tahoe Donner down Northwoods blvd to Donner Pass Rd--the main road through Truckee. As far as I know there's no public transportation but if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.  As far as free and cheap stuff to do there is of course Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake and historic Donner Pass (get off the bus at Sugar Bowl Academy).  There is a small historical museum at Donner State Park and a cross country ski trail for a change of scenery  (but dead flat)--free if you enter the park on foot I believe. Royal Gorge cross country is not free but can be reached by the sugar bowl shuttle at Soda Springs. Biggest XC in the country I think. If the kids have skates there is a small rink at the regional park in truckee, reachable by TART, there is also sometimes skating on some ponds near Donner Lake--depending on snow coverage and temps, and once in a while Donner Lake freezes, although only the shallow east end is even semi safe, and most of the lake is flat out dangerous so I wouldn't advise it. And if you PM me we might be able to arrange a showing of the Ken Burns movie about the Donner Party, at my house at Donner Lake.  Might bore the kids though.  Oh, and try to avoid the Truckee Safeway xmas-ny and holiday weekends if possible--the checkout lines are the reason the donner party resorted to cannibalism.

You do know there's a reason why they're fatting up American kids before Xmas.eek.gif
