Well, you can get racks on any rental car. Some companies charge an extra fee for a ski rack and some don't. An extra twist is that sometimes you can order a ski rack, but when you arrive to pick up the vehicle, they have run out... I usually rent my vehicles from the airport that I am flying into. I tend to bite the bullet and pay a little more for a four wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle -- if you are lucky enough to get a lot of snow, you will appreciate the extra safety... There are many that will disagree and just rent the (cheaper) sedans. I usually start my search for a rental car by looking at one of the search sites -- Orbitz usually gets me as good a price as anywhere, but sometimes the companies' websites echoes the price on Orbitz... I have learned the hard way to stick to one of the bigger rental companies -- you pay a little more perhaps, but I have been burned by smaller outfits, especially if my arrival was late at night. Another pointer is to check for prices often -- I have had the experience of seeing a price drop over a period of time. In terms of renting multiple vehicles vs one large vehicle, you just have to run the numbers. Hope this helps.
