What is the best progression after selecting a new boot?

After one goes to a number of shops, tries on the fitters' recommended boots and makes a selection of new boots in the box, what is the next progression to follow?  Should one wear the boots around the house for a while just in case, go skiing for a day or two first before making any modifications, get a thermo fit before leaving the shop, get a good foot bed off the shelf or custom made, do some combination before you leave a shop or what?  Of course there are differences in what "best fit" means in individual circumstances, but I am trying to understand in general terms.  What are the recommended next steps once you have your new boots selected that fit you best straight from the box or is it completely the fitter's art that determines what comes next?
