Whistler Blackcomb 8-15 December

Arrived yesterday afternoon after a short stint in New Orleans. Man that city just looks all used up.

So anyway, arrived at the Hilton last night, unpacked and got the logistics taken care of:

There was a decent dump recently at WB, so the great unwashed descended for Saturday for some pretty nice conditions:

1000

Seventh Heaven just opened this morning, so the goods were good:

1000

Of course, everyone knew that so:

1000

In any case, my bud Tom found things to his liking:

Overall pretty good for early December.

Looking forward to getting up to WB myself after exams are over. Good to know that the conditions are great this year, because it's been quite warm down in Vancouver.

That is quite a photo of the 7th Heaven opening day crowd. By comparison it was opening day for the Burfield Chair at Sun Peaks today. There were 4 of us there at 8:45 to bag the first chair. Then a guy showed up with his whole family and that more than doubled the size of the crowd. By the 9AM opening there were close to 20 people present.

"Hey, you kids stay offa my snow". Yup, they did.

Well the best news today was that everything worthwhile (except for Symphony) was open. While the t-bar over the glacier wasn't running, there was lots of bootpacking over there.

Visibility was decent, and conditions are pretty nice all over.

Saturday was pretty much ski on at Whistler as most were over at Blackcomb in anticipation of the opening of 7th and Glacier. Expect the reverse when Symphony opens. Good skiing this early.

Blackcomb was pretty awesome on Saturday considering the winds on Thursday. First tracks down the gut of Ruby bowl when Glacier finally opened just before 10am followed by fresh tracks down False Face on Chainsaw. Snow was surprisingly good, dry and about boot deep, always nice getting in Spankys without any bumps. Sunday it was dead, ski on everywhere.

Looks like another system will arrive for the weekend which is good.

Yeah, it was mainly Saturday with the dump during the week and the anticipation of the Alpine opening. Still didn't open Symphony today - well let's see for tomorrow.  Also locals wanted to get the good before the tourons (like me) arrive for the Christmas holidays.

So just hung out on Blackcomb today as everything (except for Showcase Bar to go to the glacier) was open and it was snowing fairly hard:

1000

Although the t-bar was closed, a number of folks decided to walk it out to the Glacier:

1000

7th Heaven side had some new snow, but was a bit shiny below the top layer, so I stayed on the Glacier chair side, and the snow was pretty good, and there was a fair amount of it:

1000

As seen, the visibility was "whistleresque", and combined with breaking in new boots made for a short day for me. Good times though.

This morning was one of those rare Whistler days - SUN!

1000

Getting a facefull on the Gondola going up Blackcomb:

1000

WB has great scenery:

1000

And even the grnarly bits are open - this isn't some northleast berm:

1000

So it was nice and blue today, but cold. Conditions are good. If you're from the least coast you'd love it, from UT, well, not so much. A bit of dust on crust going on some places.

So what happened again today - SUN! What the......am I really at WB?

Some nice accumulation overnight - 7am, some new snow on the trees:

1000

Just enough clouds to provide a background for the P2P. 1400ft+ above the valley floor:

1000

Some soft stuff off of Harmony (probably opening of Symphony today):

1000

A little bit off gnar off of Harmony with Black Tusk behind

1000

Looks like it's pretty well set for the touron hoards descending in the the coming week. Some rocks just below the surface off of 7th, but with another foot it should be good-to-go.

Back in a few weeks, but SLC beckons in the interim.
